The police are advising women and children to exercise extra caution when they travel with both legitimate operators of taxis and PH drivers.
This, after a Freeport taxi-driver was arrested just hours after being accused of raping a woman who was a passenger in his vehicle.
According to police reports, the victim, a 32-year-old woman from Enterprise, got into an H-taxi occupied by the driver and one other passenger at St. Mary’s Junction. She was heading to her job at Arena Road, Freeport around 8:10am on Thursday.
After dropping off the other passenger, the taxi driver allegedly took her to a bushy area near the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway and raped her. The accused then drove to another bushy area in Preysal, where he allegedly assaulted the victim again.
He tied the woman up, bound her mouth and placed her in the trunk of his vehicle.
The woman managed to escape any further harm by freeing herself from her binds and jumping out from the trunk of the vehicle around 11:00 am. She sought assistance and was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where she was medically examined.
The taxi driver was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident at around 11:30 pm that day in Freeport.
