World Cup 2018 has been one of surprises and upsets.
The reigning World Cup champions, Germany, were knocked out at the group stage, the first time in 80 years they’ve been knocked out in the first round. Other fan favourites and strong contenders like Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and Italy all eventually fell as the competition progressed.
Alternatively, this World Cup has been one in which the underdogs shined. Although they ultimately didn’t make it to the finals, no one could have predicted South Korea crushing Germany or Uruguay besting Portugal.
Certainly, no one predicted Croatia making it to the finals, the first time the country has ever done so. Croatia’s best ever World Cup performance was during their first outing as a country when they finished third during the 1998 tournament in France. Since then they have been unable to make it past the group stage until this year.
On the other hand, France has only World Cup title, having won in 1998 and made it to the finals once again in 2006. While they are the favourites to win, Croatia clearly has a strong shot at taking the title as well.
Following the last semi-final on Wednesday, we visited popular sports bar Trotters in Port of Spain and polled patrons on their World Cup predictions ahead of Sunday’s final battle between France and Croatia.
