A SIPARIA magistrate denied bail to two Cepep workers who appeared before her yesterday charged with a series of offences arising out of a shooting which left a labourer in a critical condition. Up to late yesterday the victim, Winston “Spree” John, 39, of Poco Alley, Siparia was at the San Fernando general hospital.
The accused, ages 29 and 33, were before magistrate Margaret Alert in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court charged with wounding John, having a gun and ammunition and having the gun and ammunition with intent to endanger lives.The elder accused called Mello, who lives at Coconut Alley in Siparia, faced an additional charge of common assault on a soldier.
Shortly after 9 pm on January 13, two men shot John near his home on the road while talking to the soldier. After shooting John in the chest and left leg, the gunmen ran off. John was taken to the Siparia health facility and doctors transferred him to San Fernando hospital.
PCs Hansraj and Titus visited the scene. Sgt Jaggernath and Cpl Ramlal of Siparia CID spearheaded investigations which lead to the arrests of the two accused.
In remanding the accused men into custody, the magistrate told them of their rights to apply to a judge in chambers for bail. She adjourned the case to February 18.
