Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan says he is unaware as to the number of buses scheduled to service Couva residents on a daily basis.
Minister Sinanan was responding to questions posed to him by Opposition Senator Wade Mark during urgent questions in the Upper House on Thursday.
Mark raised questions about the PTSC service after a newspaper report on Tuesday noted that Couva residents were left stranded with the absence of one bus.
In response, the Transport Minister said he was aware of bus schedules but could not give details about a possible disruption in service.
“My information is that the Public Transport Service Corporation provides the following bus service to the residence of Couva on a daily basis:
– Couva to POS service – This service departs from Couva at 5:30 am and 6:30 am and returns at 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm. These buses travel directly into Couva via the Couva Main Road. Additionally, during the course of the day, there are bus services along the Solomon Hochoy Highway which stops at the Preysal flyover.
– The Deluxe Coach Service – This has an average of 15 return trips per day.
– The San Fernando to PoS ECS Service – This service also has an average of 15 trips per day.
– The San Fernando to UWI Service – This also has an average of 15 trips per day
As I said, these stop at the Preysal Flyover.
The PTSC remains committed to improving the quality of service provided to its commuters on a daily basis.”
Minister Sinanan said he received reports from the PTSC based on trips and the number of commuters they transport during those trips as opposed to the number of buses in operation.
Asked whether he was aware that travellers were unhappy with the number of available buses, the Minister assured that the problem would be addressed.
“Just about a month ago the PTSC put 35 new buses into service; 15 of those went to Tobago, 20 remained in Trinidad. I also announced [that] the Ministry of Works will be taking a note to cabinet for [an] additional 200 buses to increase the fleet of buses in the Public Transport Corporation.”
The PTSC is fully aware that there is [a] need for improvement in the service and as I said before, PTSC is committed to improving the service as we go along.”
