"Sick child" fraud: Couple arrested, jailed

THREE members of a family who collected money from kind hearted citizens by pretending they had a sick child, have been arrested, prosecuted and two of them jailed.

Kissoondath Rambally, 36, his common law wife Salisha Ali, Ali’s sister Fatima Ali, 19, pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining money by false pretenses when they appeared before Rio Claro Magistrate Suimongal Ramsaran last Friday.

The three are from Edinburg, Chaguanas.


Rambally and his wife were sentenced to prison for one month. Salisha Ali was fined $2,000 or in default, serve a month in prison.

According to police, officers from the Biche Police Station received information the three had obtained a quantity of money from residents of Biche Village, by claiming they had permission from the Commissioner of Police, to collect money for a sick child. 

At their court hearing, Magistrate Ramsaran told the accused they had abused the generosity of unsuspecting citizens and that an example had to be set, to prevent this type of crime from happening again. 

Magistrate Ramsaran commended PCs Sarabjit, Tom and Mendoza, for their good work and suggested that they be recognised for their efforts. 

The officers were assisted by members of the Fraud Squad.
