Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is “not in a position” to give any further details on the health of Public Administration Minister Marlene McDonald.
McDonald, who was hospitalised earlier this month for an undisclosed illness, remains hospitalised at the St Clair Medical Centre at this time.
Outside of repeating the information contained in a statement issued by the Communications Ministry on Wednesday, when asked for an update on the Minister’s health when he appeared at the Post Cabinet media briefing, Rowley steered clear of providing any further details.
Pressed further for specifics on the Minister’s current state, the Prime Minister said he did not wish to address the issue in such a manner, nor was he in a position to so do.
“The Government made a statement when we became aware of her condition, and the statement was that she was hospitalised and that she was seriously ill. That is the information we have.”
“Secondly, based on our understanding of the nature of her situation, and the Government business that had to be addressed, I took steps to ensure that, she would be allowed to recuperate without the stresses of the office… I couldn’t tell you for how long.”
But, asked to clarify conflicting reports regarding the true state of the Minister’s health, Rowley denied that there was any inconsistency on the part of the Government relating to such information.
“We cannot speak for any other (communication) than the Government communication that was made to the population… The Government has made statements and the Government stands by the statements it has made.”
“The statements made by the Government would be based on information Government has which may be different to what other people have… we are taking positions based on the information available to the Government and the Government will stand and defend statements made by the Government.”
Senator Allyson Hinds has been appointed to act as Minister during the period of the substantive Minister’s illness.
