Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday night responded to calls from those who have proposed that it is time to unite the United National Congress (UNC).
This comes after Barataria/San Juan MP Dr. Fuad Khan recently suggested asking several former UNC members including former political leader Basdeo Panday, his daughter Mickela Panday and former Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner, to return to the party.
On Sunday, the younger Panday claimed that following talks with Khan she learned that the Opposition Leader is unwilling to meet with her or with anyone else who has been criticising the party.
However, Khan reportedly denied this, while Panday says she stands by her statements.
Speaking at the UNC’s Monday Night Forum in St. Joseph last night, the Opposition Leader said the party welcomes anyone willing to work in the best interest of the country.
“You know there are some outside, people have all kind of views, who are talking about we need to unite the UNC. There are those who are looking for a place in the sun. And, I want to say tonight that we welcome anyone who is willing to work for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. And we must remember also that the 1970’s, the 1980’s and the 1990’s were very different times from today in 2018 as we go forward in 19 and 20, very different times.”
However, the UNC political leader said new and younger faces are needed within the party.
“And therefore we need new faces, new voices, new strengths. We need the young people of our party and our country to come forward. We are not to go backwards,” she said.
Persad-Bissessar also added that the UNC can win the next general election alone.
This as she called on those in the party to have confidence in the UNC.
“For those who think we need crutches and props to win, put them aside. Get thee behind me Satan. The UNC can win alone. So they are spreading a narrative and I do not want you to fall in any trap of that narrative and I do not want you to fall in the trap of that narrative. That narrative is the UNC bad, the PNM bad, so let’s go form a third party. You see these third-party tricks I am not falling for them this time,” she added.
