Her family had searched relentlessly, hoping for a miracle – the return of young mother Sharlene Somai who went to the village parlour Tuesday night and did not return home.

That search ended in heartbreak yesterday afternoon when Somai’s relatives were taken to an abandoned cane field near her home in Petersfield Village, Felicity, where her semi-nude body was found.

The 23-year-old may have been strangled. A Police Service news release last night stated “the body was found lying on its stomach, with a black plastic bag over the head and a piece of green and yellow wire around the neck”.

A male relative has been taken into custody.

Somai left her home around 8 p.m. to go to a nearby parlour to purchase a phone card. She never returned home.

Somai lived with her four-year-old son and husband, Suraj Toolsie, at her family’s home.

Relatives said they knew something was wrong and went to the Chaguanas Police Station that same night seeking help.

Her brother, Anthony Somai, criticised the officers for not acting immediately.
