The new International Soca Monarch (ISM) chair is soca artiste Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez and she is already promising that the power soca category will return to the show.
She made the statement in a phone interview with Newsday after it was announced by National Carnival Commission (NCC) chairman Winston “Gypsy” Peters that Lyons-Alvarez would be heading the annual competition.
She said in the interview, “Peter Scoon has been asking for the last three years because I sat down with him for the last couple years and people who know, know that I have been involved in soca monarch from a logistic standpoint.
“I go to the event every year, check on the artistes, make sure everything is okay. Where I think they are lacking I tend to help out. There was a year, I cooked food and carried it for the whole of backstage.
“For me, soca monarch has always been something that is close to my heart.”
Lyons- Alvarez said she did not want to go too in depth as it was a team effort, but what she wanted to make clear to all of TT is that “Power is back.”
She was heading into a meeting with her ISM team, and promised to give a more in-depth interview after the meeting.
