A fire in St James on Saturday night has left an 81-year-old woman homeless.
The incident reportedly took place at the corner of Church and Jerry Streets, St James.
According to police reports, around 9:20 pm Yvonne Roberts was at her home when she smelled smoke.
On checking, she saw the fire from the corridor of her home.
The elderly woman exited the building and raised an alarm.
Neighbours contacted the fire service, but they also attempted to form a bucket brigade to save the building.
Appliances from the Four Roads Fire Station and the Wrightson Road Head Quarters responded.
The officials were able to contain the blaze, however, the building itself suffered significant damage.
And while it was suspected to be structurally sound, it had been “gutted” by the fire.
Fire officers are expected to return to the scene today to determine what may have caused the blaze.
