Cop shoots himself with suspect’s gun

A police constable accidentally shot himself with a gun he took away from a criminal suspect in East Dry River on Sunday.

The officer was taking the 9mm pistol to the police station when it went off at around 10p.m.

At the time, he was in a police vehicle heading towards the headquarters of the Inter Agency Task Force in El Socorro.


He was hit in the left leg and taken for medical treatment. His condition is listed as serious.

The police officer was part of a unit which had arrested a 30-year-old gunman.

A  team of officers, including PC Billingi and PC Julien, were on mobile patrol in the Clifton Hill community, off the East Dry River, when they observed a man acting suspiciously.

The suspect was confronted and searched, and a 9mm pistol, loaded with 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition was allegedly found.

The suspect was taken to the Besson Street Police Station for further questioning, while the weapon was being sent to the Task Force HQ for safe keeping. It was during this trip that the weapon went off.
