Bank manager in court for fraud

A 40-year-old bank manager and her 42-year-old husband are both before the courts on allegations of conspiring to defraud the Arima Borough Corporation of an estimated $400,000.

The accused are Melissa Gopaul and Perry Pollard, of Roystonia, Couva.

They both appeared before Port of Spain Magistrate Nanette Forde John on Monday.

The charges were laid indictably and the accused were not called upon to enter a plea.

The couple is accused of attempting to deposit a fraudulent check from the corporation’s account earlier this month.

RBC officials realised that the deposited cheque was fraudulent and contacted the Fraud Squad, who launched inquiries.

After the matter was called, it was transferred to the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court as this was the district in which the allegations allegedly occurred.

The matter was then adjourned to Friday.

The couple is said to be out on a bail bond which was initially granted to them over the weekend.

It was reaffirmed by Forde-John at yesterday’s court hearing.

More on this as it becomes available.
